change

One more exam goes by and I feel the urge to ask this question. Why are we doing this? Why give exams which literally have no meanings in our lives? Subjects are supposed to be interesting such that you learn, but an exam is a forced way to make you mug up whatever you get, to make you a parrot who can repeat what the teacher wants. So, I ask “Are we really learning anything?”

Well, my point of view may differ from the masses but I do feel that the education system we have as such does not really educate, it just teaches you to mug up whatever study material you get in front of you. Education cannot be measured by a set of questions. A set of questions is just a lottery which shows how lucky you were in mugging up the right questions. Couple with that the fact that some subjects are useless and can only deter you from studying. Well, I think I should rephrase that because a subject can never be useless, a good faculty can enthuse you into learning any subject but these good faculties are like diamonds in a coal mine. So, basically a boring subject together with a sub-par faculty drains out the interest of the student. I believe the student should have his say on which topics he needs to study in order to be successful and not be forced into the subjects and if he is in college, he should be able to realise the importance of any subject to his field. I believe this measure can improve the education system a great deal. As for examinations, I feel examinations should never be a set of questions, the faculty should be able to judge the student on the basis of merit and how much he understands a topic and not by which questions he can answer. If a person understands a topic but is not able to mug up questions, he stands to lose his interest as well as his grades. I have no idea how that is possible but I do believe in one thing “CHANGE IS NEEDED”

  1. This is the biggest irony of India - Education system. Since play group a kid is always taught to mug up the books and secure more than 95 percent marks. Below 95 is despicable. In India, we can't study the subjects of our own interest. Specially those who are interested in music, sports, etc. We have only one option for our lives - To mug up from books and end up as a 'common man'.
Anyways, don't mind but, you know, I always keep thinking about this system so I didn't find anything new in this one. But yeah, "Change is needed!"

  3. ok.. super like!
    Exactly my thought!
How the hell can you judge someone based on how effectively he/she licks d study material and slurp it up on the answer sheet? overlooking d horrific cases where some unfortunate ones r subjected 2 evaluation by deranged, uneducated book abiding losers? And precisely.. ofcourse if one, who is a college student,is unsure of what all topics he or she should study(this being the main argument in not allowing students 2 choose their own subjects), then what good is he/she or their so called "education" whatsoever?
Hear, hear, "change is needed"! :P

  6. You know, there is a saying that says something to the effect of "Democracy is not the best system of Government, but it's better than all the others we have."
I'm not saying that the current system of education is good, cuz it's not. Students should have the right to choose what subjects they want to study.
However, as far as the examination and evaluation system is concerned, we need a standardised system that works reasonably well for both sides... I don't think we can have a better way of evaluating. More concept-based questions would be welcome, but you have to realise that everyone has to memorise some stuff at some level.
Anyway, congrats on writing something that invites a discussion

  7. dude.... the teachers should be capable enough to evaluate not based on a single exam but instead on a continuous evaluation basis

  8. high 5 for d last comment!seriously... examination is required.. bt what does it really achieve? it only mks d students mug up stuff for a fortnight to achieve "good marks" symoblic of "good education" whereas it definitely does not motivate one to understand and grasp the basic concepts involved.. wich is btw supposed 2 be the aim of education primarily! lol fact- most of d toppers dont evn knw why smthngs done in crtain process or the logic behind, and the std ans being-"dude... dont waste my tym... if its thr, its imp... why bother so much" Intelligent indeed!

  10. this is so spot-on!in fact, in every field all we do is just rote learn so that we can earn marks.period. and all those who do so are the sole toppers.period, again. for students who want to think out of the conventional are tagged as useless and over-smart, while those who follow the prescribed text books blindly are coined to be obedient and intelligent by the faculty as well as parental groups...hence, for the greater good, change is needed sorely!
